System Requirements
What do I need to view the web site?
Just about any computer, tablet or mobile phone made in the last few years. The site works in all the usual web browsers — Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox — and there is nothing to install.
Does it work on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The site rearranges itself to fit the screen you are using. On a phone, the menu is behind the yellow MENU button at the top left of the screen, and photographs can be tapped to see them full screen. Everything on the site — the members directory, photographs, the forum and your messages — works on a phone as well as on a computer.
The writing is too small for me.
You can make everything bigger. On a computer, hold down Ctrl (or Cmd on an Apple Mac) and press +; press − to make it smaller again. On a phone or tablet, spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in.
Site Navigation
How do I find my way round the 100th web site?
Use the navigation buttons in the left panel. There are also links on the Main page to Notices and most of the other main topics. Details of all buttons and their links are given in the Site Map.
Would it be possible to fit a clickable link from an external site back to “Home” on the Main Site Page? At the moment you can click on a link from the Main Page (eg Forum, Photos), and end up on another site, but you cannot return to the Home Page.
See the answer in the Forum section below.
Text Size
The text on some pages seems to be out of alignment or overlaps other parts of the page.
Browsers have a “Text Size” setting which can affect layout. If this is set to Large or Very Large the text on the web page may become unpredictable and run over or appear out of line. The web pages have been designed for viewing with a Normal text size setting.
Member Profiles
How do I register my details on the web site?
Click the Admin button in the left nav panel, then Contact Admin from the sub menu. There you will see options for a direct input using email or a link to the forum where detailed instructions are provided.
Why is my Profile box empty?
If you have not received a request for inputs, go to the web site Main page, go to the Contact page and follow the link, or go directly to the Forum “Members’ Personal Info Input” topic. You can then submit the required info.
I haven’t got a picture of me at Locking.
Most people haven’t. First, look at the Group photo and see if you are on there. If you are, your face can be extracted and enhanced — just let Admin know the location. We also have quite a few pictures of the ‘old days’, so you may be on one of those.
Pictures
If you have any pictures that would be of interest to other members, please send them in!
Why am I not on the 100th Entry Group Photo?
Two Group photos are available (1962 and 1964). The 1962 version shows about 142 apprentices from a total intake of 155, so 13 are missing. The 1964 version has a better coverage, but there are still a handful missing.
Why is the picture permanently obscured by yellow boxes — I can’t see who’s on it!
Many images display an overlay of yellow boxes when the mouse cursor is moved over the picture, revealing names. This technique used Javascript, which is why some older browsers showed the overlay permanently on. This site is being rebuilt with a modern equivalent — hover a name below a photo to see who’s who.
Forum
Who is the guest who seems to be permanently looking at the forum?
The term “guest” is given to anyone who is not registered or who is not logged in; it doesn’t belong to any specific individual. You may see a guest on the forum several times in a day, but that could be several different people at different times.
